Southern Tennessee Mountain

This pre-shaped stock appears to be a representation of a Southern rifle of Tennessee around the early to mid 1800’s. Understand the South was roughly defined as South of the Virginias and included what is now Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and all points surrounding. This particular roman
nose style which is rare among most Southern guns was one I believe made by a very few individuals most likely forhimself and close ties. I have seen only a few pictures of this comb feature in Southern architecture. One was on what was described as a bear gun, another by John Bull or an associate. All were flintlock rifles which indicate an earlier period gun. Locks on Southerns were round-backed, flat plates with little or no decoration. Very few Southern guns have survived their origin. These were the poor mans gun. The farmers who had little if any money.  Rounded back English locks or locks with snubbed-off tails in both flint (on earlier guns) and percussion (on later) were commonly seen on all Southern guns. English styled locks were the rule since they were easier and cheaper to obtain. Double set triggers commonly had “half moon” rear and straight or lipped front trigger. This pre-shaped stock comes standard with straight octagon barrel and rod channel with drilled ramrod hole; and is not inlet for lock, triggers or cut for buttplate. Right hand only.
