Early Lancaster - Jacob Dickert / Isaac Haines

Early Lancaster - Jacob Dickert / Isaac Haines Photo

This pre-shaped stock represents the heavier features of early  Lancaster school development of the period before 1800. Features are wide early style butt and strong square cheek shaped with enough length to accommodate pulls up to 15”, a gentle taper across the lock panels from front to rear to create the beautiful flared wrist at the breech. Original early Lancaster rifles used a flatter buttplate with a faceted comb ending in the classic wedding band. This stock could be inlet for a swamped octagon A, B or C weight barrel by Rice, GM or Colerain for an additional charge. (See inletting options below). The forestock is shaped but generous to allow any molding or carving, is inlet for the barrel and ramrod channel only, and comes uncut for the buttplate. “Early” features typical to the school are the daisy-headed end opening patchbox, not pierced, with simple engraved C-scrolls. These are thought to be the earliest patchboxes to be engraved. Simple C-scroll relief carving behind the cheek, sideplates with heavily beveled edges and wide buttplates are the most noticeable of the style. One of the most prominent Lancaster ‘smiths was Germany born Jacob Dickert. Dickert was among the most recorded of Lancaster gunsmiths with at least 173 known rifles credited to him. Later in his impressive career he produced a splendid side opening patchbox of the same outside design which is a marvel to study! We now make this side door opening, beautiful domed lid patchbox! His sixty years of experience also included rifles produced in mass quantity for government contracts. Our pre-shaped stock is representative of this early style of Lancaster County, PA by Jacob Dickert and other makers such as Isaac Haines, Albright, Schweitzer, Gumpf and Fordney just to name a few.
