Chambersburg School

Characteristics of the Chambersburg School of Kentucky rifles developed from those of the Emmitsburg School (Maryland) to the east, consisted of a very straight upper comb line which was extremely low, not rising much above the wrist, a long sleek appearance, and square cheek. Patchbox design was basically two styles and predominately one which we show in our parts list, and the guns typically had very little relief carving. They did however, exhibit fine silver inlays; one detail I noticed was the use of silver hearts inlaid behind the lock panels on each side, an Emmitsburg School detail as well as very long thimbles. These guns were produced during the time period when relief carving was becoming a thing of the past; discarded as unnecessary ornamentation. Makers of this period school were Schweitzer, Carlisle, Johnston, J. Clark, and J. Clippinger. This particular stock represents the style by gunmaker Abraham Schweitzer of Antrim Township in Franklin County, PA and then later of Chambersburg, PA, where he died in 1831. This pre-shaped stock comes standard with straight octagon barrel up to 7/8” barrel, and drilled ramrod hole. It is not inlet for lock, triggers or cut for buttplate.
